How To Write The Perfect Instagram Caption

Imagine this: you have the perfect picture to add to your feed. Everything is flawless. Lighting. Angles. Everything. You cannot wait to share it with your loyal followers. There’s just one problem…you need a caption. The elusive Instagram caption has plagued influencers big and small. The good news? We created a guide to help you demystify and craft like-worthy captions.

1 – Draft, Draft, Draft

Although it is possible to nail it on your first try…it is more likely that a few revisions wouldn’t hurt. Haven’t you heard? “Great writing takes time” – Hemingway (probably). For a platform like Instagram, less is usually more. Keep it concise. Also, never be afraid to get a second opinion. After all, every great writer needs a great editor!

2 – Front-Load the Important Stuff

Every great piece of writing needs a hook. We live in a fast-paced world. As people scroll through their feeds each post only gets a brisk glance. You have a split-second to grab your audiences’ attention; it is imperative that you capitalize on your opportunity. Instagram formatting cuts off after the first couple lines, so start with the important stuff and add mentions later on in the post. This could look like a call-to-action or a witty intro. Whatever you choose, stay true to your brand’s voice. Consistency is key.

3 – Highlight Your Brand’s Voice While Keeping With Instagram’s Lighthearted Tone

Every social media network is different and has different qualities that you will want to accentuate. For example, LinkedIn is more serious and professional while Instagram is more playful. To get the most out of your Instagram post it should be fun, genuine, and charismatic. This platform is your chance to show off your brand’s more personable side. Think less business and more human connection. There are a few ways to achieve this. First, you must decide if you want longer “storyteller-like” captions (these are typically in a block format) or shorter “minimalist type” which span only a few lines. Once you choose a style—stick with it! This will help you start to build a consistent and recognizable voice for your brand.  Finally, don’t be afraid to throw in a few emojis! They add flair and help break up your text (especially for longer captions).

4 – Invite Engagement

Driving engagement is essential to digital marketing. A great way to encourage people to interact with your content is to ask them to comment, tag a friend, or share an opinion. If you are struggling to cultivate engagement, create an incentive. Comment-to-win contests tend to be successful on a platform like Instagram. It’s a win-win!

5 – Know Your Audience

Instagram has over one billion active monthly users. Ask yourself: “who of these users am I trying to appeal to?” This will help you create your digital marketing plan and tailor it to your business’s specific needs. Is your audience younger? Well then maybe they won’t understand your 80’s pop reference and they might need more context. Is your audience older? Then maybe you should stay away from “text speak” such as “LOL.” That means “lots of love”…right? Answering these questions will ultimately help you create a better caption.
