Tips For Small Business Owners On Setting Goals In 2021

Goal setting for your small business is very similar to the way you create goals for your personal life. Goal setting isn’t too difficult. Many people make goals and have the willingness to work towards them…The problem? Making a plan to achieve those goals. Without a working plan to reach your goals, they are simply good intentions. Even the best of intentions don’t create tangible change. These tips will inspire you to chase your dreams in 2021.

The key to goal-setting is adding small tweaks in your language that subconsciously give you more incentive to chase after your goal. Here are a few simple changes you can make to convert your dreams into broken down, manageable goals.

Make Them Specific

Grey area and confusion makes it tough to go after a goal…How can you achieve it if you don’t know what you are trying to reach? Rather than saying “I want to increase sales this year” try “I want to increase sales by 25% this year.” This leads to the next point.

Make Sure They Are Measurable

You want to make sure that you can see your progress and actually know if you achieved your goal or not. Saying “I want to work harder” or “I want to be happier” are tough goals to measure. Instead, say something like this: “I want to increase my revenue by 10%” or “I want to get enough done during the work week, so that I can have weekends off.”

Ensure They Are Attainable

Dreaming big is important, but if you set a big umbrella goal you might become overwhelmed and give up. Break down goals and tackle them in small bits. If you are a small bookstore, saying you want to rival Amazon within the year might be tough. Try writing “By the end of 2021, I want to establish an e-commerce site.”

Keep it Relevant

Your goals should align with your long-term plan. If your long term plan is to rival Amazon, your 2021 goal should not be to establish a retail store in a rural town. Make sure your short-term goals directly align with your long-term goals.

Give Them an Expiration Date

The only way to measure goals is to give them a specific time-frame. Also, by setting a time limit it creates urgency and the desire to work towards your goal on a daily basis. An example of this is “I want to increase sales by 25% by December 2021.”

The Importance of Daily To-do Lists

Daily planning is a great way to make sure that you stay on track. At the beginning or end of each work day create a list of everything you want to get done that day/the next day. Although it may seem tedious, creating a list of tasks can be very motivating. I don’t know about you, but I find it gratifying to cross items off of my list (especially on super busy days)! I encourage you to take 5 minutes a day to plan your days. As an added bonus, you might even find that you boost your productivity and efficiency.

With 2021 right around the corner, we encourage you to take 15 minutes to sit down and write out some goals you would like to achieve in 2021. Don’t just say them in your head…WRITE THEM DOWN (and have this guide close by so that you make sure you are writing smart goals)! Dream big. We are so excited to see what you achieve in the upcoming year.
